David Muse, best known as Firefall’s longtime multi-instrumentalist, has died aged 73.
“It is with heavy hearts that we have to announce that our friend and beloved David Muse has lost his ongoing battle with cancer,” a post on the band’s official Facebook page noted. “David passed away peacefully at home on Saturday morning with his wife Patty by his side. While we are heartbroken, we are comforted to know that he is no longer in pain. His love and wonderful memories will remain with us forever and he will never be forgotten.
Muse was diagnosed with cancer in early 2020. A GoFundMe page that had been set up to help cover medical costs noted that this was not his “first encounter with this horrible disease, but he had it. already defeated and was convinced he could do it again.” Money collected through the GoFundMe account will now go towards all unpaid medical bills and final expenses.
Born in Rome, Georgia in 1949, Muse spent his early musical career bouncing around in various bands. He eventually latched onto Firefall in 1975, joining a lineup that also included Rick Roberts (guitar, vocals), Larry Burnett (guitar, vocals), Jock Bartley (guitar, vocals), Mark Andes (bass), and Michael Clarke ( battery). ).
The band released a steady stream of albums through the 70s and early 80s, with Muse providing flute, sax and keyboard parts. Their 1976 self-titled debut album went platinum, bolstered by the success of their Top 10 single “Your Are the Woman”. Luna Seafared nearly as well, achieving gold sales with the single “Just Remember I Love You” reaching No. 11. 1978’s “Strange Way” Momentum would also reach No. 11, but commercial success would soon begin to wane for the band. The classic Firefall lineup disbanded in 1981, although various incarnations of the band with new members continued to record and tour for several years.
Muse has kept busy over the years, recording solo instrumental material and contributing to the work of other artists. He had two stints with the Marshall Tucker Band (1996–2000 and 2003–2008) and joined Firefall as a full-time member in 2011. He also formed the short-lived band Boulder County Conspiracy, which included many of his alumni Firefall collaborators. .
In total, Muse has appeared on over 25 albums during his career spanning more than five decades. He was inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame in 2014 alongside the other members of Firefall.
